GAPS (Gut and Psychology/ Physiology Syndrome) is a condition which establishes a connection between gut bacteria, functions of the digestive system and the brain.
The GAPS protocol was created by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a Russian-trained neurologist (MMedSci in neurology), Nutritionist (MMedSci in nutrition) with a full-time medical practice in the UK. She originally developed this healing protocol to help her own son who has now recovered from autism. Through her clinical work over the past 15 years, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride found that it has also been successful in improving symptoms of:
The GAPS protocol is a structured program to restore the integrity of the digestive tract and rebalance the natural gut flora.
The focus is on re-balancing intestinal bacteria and consuming foods that will heal the gut while removing other foods that are harder to digest. Grains are avoided, as are sugar and starchy vegetables because these contain longer chains of carbohydrate molecules that are difficult to break down. Fermented vegetables and fermented dairy are used for their ability to restore beneficial bacteria. Supplementation, detoxification and lifestyle changes are also used.
“Once you heal and seal your gut lining, and once you make your digestive system healthy and working properly again, you’ll be surprised how many various symptoms in your body originated from your digestive system. Most symptoms start disappearing, because the health and the disease are usually born inside your digestive system. That’s where they originate from” -Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride
The GAPS program aims to clean up and heal the digestive tract so it stops being a major source of toxicity and starts to nourish the body again. It restores the immune system, and reduces symptoms associated with toxic overload. It rebalances intestinal bacteria, allowing for good digestion and for the whole body to return to a state of balance and function optimally again.
